STBB #782 - Dillicious Magic

STBB# 782 - Dillicious Magic

Dilla month already over, but recently got into the soulquarian stuff again and thought it might be nice to flip one of many JayDee Samples.

Samples

RULES
- Use the Sample 1 (Ray) in any way you want
Just let us know how you got inspired by the sample and what you did. (If you want)
- Sample 2 is free to use but must not. (can also be the main sample)
- Vsts and outside instruments allowed.

Let`s give each other some constructive feedback.

I feel like the comment section was a bit empty the last battles. I am always a fan of honest and constructive feedback.
You have a different pair of ears, different speakers, different taste.
That´s what keeps me going and constantly improving my sampling, beatmaking and mixing.
Just tell me what you think that i can improve.

The Fine Print:
Upload your beat to Soundcloud, include "STBB 782“ in the title, and POST TO THIS FORUM by Wednesday at Midnight, Pacific time.
Try to leave as much feedback as you can and you will receive it back.
For easy browsing's sake, you can also go to the STBB page: https://soundcloud.com/stbbcollection
Label entries that are posted after the deadline as 'late entry' and entries that don't comply with the rules as: 'non-entry' in your track title.
EVERYONE VOTES - by Friday at Midnight, Pacific time
Winner: post new sample, rules, etc by Saturday at Noon, Pacific time and upload the sample here: https://wetransfer.com/

100% agree with encouraging more constructive criticism .. I could definitely use some , especially with mixes/mastering (I've been re-listening to a lot of my entries noticing over time they've often been too loud and thus more harsh/distorted in the upper mids)

When Wig mentioned his own desire to hear more constructive feedback last round it got me thinking about it so glad Naturelle is also on the same page

Obviously same goes for sound design, arrangement and groove/rhythmic subtleties.. These things can sometimes be hard to communicate but I'm always down to try to share my ideas.

I've got a bit of extra time this week.. like this comment if you want me to give detailed feedback on your track this week.

Peace and Love to all those who take the time to create,
DB

went through the sample and got 15 chops in simpler. programmed a four bar drum loop in session view. recorded 33 bars of live sample chops over the drum loop to an ableton clip. pitched the sample up +6. programmed three different bass loop clips to trigger live. went through the Santana song looking for a phrase to chop and found one. added a synth chord from ableton 'switched on dco' patch. recorded all clips to arrangement view while cycling through the three bass loop clips, doing live track mutes and doing live 404 style master effects with ableton effects. added vocal cut and fx hits. ableton 'drum buss grand' rack on the drums and 'master crisp saturation' rack on the master buss

Hello, fam I have a thing to say, constructive criticism is pointing out a problem and then going some helpful advice. So saying your kick is not punchy enough is not constructive unless you explain how you create punchy drums. Peace and love fam

I'm ok with people just pointing out what I could fix and figuring out how to do it myself. but I'll always share all my tricks if someone asks

Used Sample #1 finding a nice call and response to set the tone. Added Sample 2 into the song as a subtle compliment lowering the volume to a near perceptible level. Recorded a vocal phrase on my phone and imported it into the second half of the song. composed the bass to have a subtle relationship to the overall track. The rest is history.

Yo.
What's good peps?

I chopped up the horns from the sample in the usual way. Pitched it up +5.
Bit of EQ to shape the sample sound... ;)
I used a filter to give the samples I used a bit more movement.
Just added outside drums. Two 4 bar loops, one of which I made into a 3 bar loop and then made into a 12 bar loop.
Bass from the sample / Low end filtered and amped up.
88Bpm? Can't remember now....

:salute: 🖖 ☮️
Peace Mox.

Gotta cook some food for my ducklings. I might check in later to drop a few lines on how I went about the process.

Here's my sub:

I'll go ahead and give myself some constructive criticism. the ride is too loud and had too much resonance. use a different snare. the whole song should be in a different key. it has too much of a dark vibe.

Hey All,
You can't keep a good twat down! I hope all are well.
I tried many things but I like the beginning loop but it did not fit to any grid so I had to loop by ear. I couldn't get Carlos to loop correctly so I picked up my Kontackt guitar and began to play.
Glad to be back- much love to all.

Peace, Hugh

Wanted to take enough time to listen to every submission and leave feedback. But have to drive 600 km because a family member is passing away. It‘s all good though.
Just wanted to let you know that i am not making it and will listen back to all of your beats when i am back.

Happy beatmaking everyone
