stbb664 SNES & Creative Limitations

"The SNES processed sound with two chips, a processing core and a DSP. They only had a capacity of 64 kb, meaning that all of a game’s sounds and music had to fit in this tiny space. This might seem impossible if you’ve ever played enduring classics like Donkey Kong Country, a game known for its impressive musical score. This is where the concept of creative limitation comes in. The theory says that creativity can flourish if given a set of boundaries. In this case it was a small amount of memory, and within that tiny space the composer at Rare (David Wise) who made this game a work of art was able to develop a musical masterpiece within strict limitations." (from hackaday.com)

The audio chips in the snes had a really special, one of kind sound and some of the greatest game soundtracks of all time were composed for it and I thought it would be fun sampling material for this week.

rules:
-no outside softsynth vsts are allowed EXCEPT for bass
-no outside hardware synths allowed
-no outside melodic samples of any kind allowed
-bass, drums, vocals and foley recordings are all ok

Wanted to put some limitations on this one because I wanna hear what yall do with just the source material !!

special rule:
pick ONE track from your favorite snes game and use it in your track along with at least ONE of the provided samples. Post a link to the track you picked so we can all see what it was.

greats samples mayne

couldnt fit another sample on the main track, so i made another beat with the top gear title theme

Used secret of the forrest,
and chopped 1 part of ice cave chant to play it as an instrument
for the last half of the beat

flipped killer instinct. MPC4000 for the drums. sent all of the other samples provided to the mpc4000, reamped pieces through pedals live into the SP404sx. Sent some into the akai s20 for some time strecth & other secrets. all sound ended up back in the mpc4000. then i live mixed from the sp404sx to a friends Akai GX-400D SS reel to reel because i was bored. The tape was a reel i have been using for about 7 years now just abusing the shit out of/re recording shit on top of it and its degraded a lot so there are some dope dropouts. cheers.

Ohhh, look at all these rich kids with their SNES and shit. I had a C64 I traded for with a stolen BMX and later on I got an Amiga.
The themes for my favorite games sounds crap and different in the SNES versions.

hey fam, i struggled with the "extra snes" sample :-) therefor this is a non-entry but anyhow, nice samples and fun weekend challenge.

Wasn't really paying attention, but I think I used the krankys konga sample in the pack and combined it with (again, I really wasn't paying much mind to this stuff) a smple from this:

Used the sp808, 555 and 303, some op1 for bass in the second half. Sampled from this awesome sound-library https://www.conservethesound.de/ for percs.

I didnt have to steal shit cos i was too young but I had a C64 too and that SiD chip shit is the business bro none of this fancy DSP instrumentation...all clicks, fuzz and blips. I made some dope beats sampling games from that age

Quickest beat I made in a looooong time...not sure that's a good thing, but it just felt done.
Used the secret of the forest as main sample and added stuff from Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 (LOVED that rollercoaster level as a kid).
Also added only SNES soundfonts from williamkage.com for drums & bass & effects (extra challenge if you will).

Never had an SNES and had to go to friends houses....which I did a lot...street fighter II, mario kart, super mario land, contra, sim city. star trek, obviously zelda, secret of mana...good times.

I recognize that chrono trigger secret of the forest track--we used it for week 396

Man you got a good memory. Do you (or anyone else) remember what the other sample was from that round? I flipped it at the time but only seem to have a mp3 demo of the beat and not the project folder.

that chrono trigger album is fire and that's why it's one of the most sampled game soundtracks ever.

not home atm but will prob be able to let you know in a week's time provided the file is named.

Hey folks! First time submitting a beat for one of these. Always been quite intimidated by the standard, but looking forward to doing more!
I used the Northern Hemisphere track from the sample pack and used some bits from Street Fighter too.

Peace
